We all know that raising young children can be challenging. What Mary didn’t realize is just how challenging it can be to parent adult children. Mary’s husband passed away a few years ago, after almost 40 years of marriage. Mary then found herself sad, lonely, and living away from her three adult children. It was about that time that one of her daughters was struggling in an abusive situation. Once told that she was unable to have children, this daughter now had three young children without the strength to leave the abusive situation. Mary realized the need to step in. Mary traveled to her daughter’s home to be with this young family. Things remained tough. It was time to move again. This time to northwest Iowa, where her other two children live.
Mary walked into Love INC feeling scared and lost. In order to keep themselves safe, they had to leave all their belongings behind. Her request was for her grandchildren: clothing and cribs. As Mary and the Love INC staff talked, Mary opened up about some of her past struggles….which included many physical ailments and major depression. The Love INC staff admired Mary’s strength and commitment to her children and grandchildren.
The Love INC staff person said she would check what clothing and cribs were available for her. She also referred Mary to the Family Crisis Center, recognizing the need for specialized counseling for her daughter who had endured an abusive relationship. Mary slowly began seeing small glimpses of hope. Before Mary left, she and the staff person joined hands and prayed together.
